Rug Washing Process

Check-In
Check-In
When your fine-rug arrives at our facility, Magna-Dry carefully inspects it for spots and stains, soiling conditions, wear patterns, repair needs and other areas of concern such as pet odors, etc. The rug is also measured to determine a cost for service.

Dry Soil Removal
Dry Soil Removal
The next 2 steps in rug washing treatment is front-side and reverse-side vacuuming as well as a vigorous dusting with specialty equipment to remove all dry soils. / Removal of dry-soil is vital to restoring the appearance and maintaining the life of your rug. A respected study by vacuum cleaner manufacturer The Eureka Company determined that a 9 x 12 area rug can hold up to 87 pounds of dry soil before looking really dirty! Those deeply embedded dry soils are abrasive and cut & deplete rug fibers like sandpaper every time you walk across your rug.

At Magna-Dry, most dry soils from deep in the foundation of your rug are removed with a proprietary Rug Duster that loosens all the dry particulate soil that has accumulated in the rug—even hardened soils that have been embedded for years! There is no comparison to conventional rug beating.

Rug Washing
Rug Washing
The rug-wash spa treatment continues as your rug is placed into Magna-Dry’s unique wash tub. Note the current which is created by the special, velocity appropriate star paddle-wheel. It provides enough flow and gentle agitation to mimic the age old hand river washing technique.

As your rug lightly twists & turns in the churning water, soils are removed and the appearance of your rug is renewed. Nothing in this process causes damage to rug fibers or rug fringe.

A blend of proprietary cleaning agents, (all rigorously tested in the development phase of the rug washing system) are added to the wash tub to aid in the cleaning process. Magna-Dry is therefore confident that colors will be restored to their very best appearance and that dye stability or dye transfer is never a problem.

In fact, the Magna-Dry rug-washing system is so safe that we can clean even the costliest heirloom rugs and sensitive antiques with complete confidence.
Water Removal

Once your rug has been washed, we utilize a rug wringing centrifuge designed to quickly remove water from your rug. This process resembles the spin cycle on your washing machine and dramatically accelerates the drying process. You will no longer have to wait weeks to have a clean rug back in place in your home!

Final Drying / Finishing
Final Drying / Finishing
When your rug comes out of the centrifuge it is hung on a special hydraulic lift-rack to complete the drying phase. Air is gently circulated to further speed the evaporation process. As part of the “finishing” stage, the entire rug is soft-groomed with the knap of the rug and the fringe (if any) is fully groomed out.

Once completely dry, a final detailed inspection of your rug is completed prior to being rolled and wrapped for final delivery.

How We Wash Fine Rugs

Magna-Dry uses a unique cleaning system that replicates the old-country river-washing method of cleaning, but with modern technology.  It delivered the best results without risking damage to the rug.

The equipment used in the system allows Magna-Dry to utilize a process that is similar to sending your rug to a spa! Even the most delicate rugs can be safely cleaned in our total immersion process.

Once the washing is complete and the soil is removed, the wet rugs are placed into a large centrifuge unit to safely and quickly remove nearly all of the water that a rug absorbs during cleaning.

This process imitates age-old washing and drying techniques and delivers outstanding cleaning results that completely flush out the dirt, dust, and debris and other contaminants that can build up in area rugs over time. Read more about the rug washing process.

Oriental / Fine-Rug Cleaning

With Magna-Dry, your rug will feel like it’s been to a spa!  From delicate, antique oriental rugs to contemporary, bound rugs, our exclusive process safely and gently cleans and restores the color, luster and beauty of your rug.

What separates Magna-Dry from other rug cleaners is our specialized full-immersion equipment that flushes away the soil trapped deep in rugs without abrasive scrubbing or harsh chemicals that can damage fine rugs permanently.

Services for your Rug

Pick-Up & Delivery

We are happy to pick-up and deliver your rug or you can drop off and pick up your rug for a discount.

Oriental Rug Cleaning

Magna-Dry does not use highly aggressive and abrasive equipment and techniques that could harm your rug. Instead, we use an exclusive process and special equipment designed to safely and gently restore rugs to their very best appearance.

Fine Rugs Stain Removal

Oriental / Fine Rugs are often crafted with wool or silk fibers which can present significant stain removal challenges. Magna-Dry’s stain removal experts plus a unique blend of chemistry provides the best chance of removing those stains without damaging fibers or dyes. In addition, rug fringe responds outstandingly well to our cleaning process and will look great after cleaning!

Soil and Stain Protection

Magna-Dry highly recommends protecting fine wool rugs with Formula1 Fiber Protection for Wool. This protector offers an excellent barrier against abrasive dry-soils that can wear out your rug prematurely. It also offers excellent protection against difficult to remove oily-soils, and water based spills will bead up for easier removal. For rugs exposed to direct sunlight Magna-Dry offers a rug protector with UV protection.

Pet Odors and Stain Removal

Our rug cleaning equipment & process is perfect for the total removal of pet odors caused by pet urine as well as animal hair and body oils. Magna-Dry applies a special product to affected areas that contains extracts from sources such as cactus, grains, grasses, coconuts, rice, corn, potatoes, soy, trees, and minute amounts of natural or nonionic surfactants and pure water.

This unique treatment breaks down the pet oils and the urine enzymes / salts and odor causing bacteria that feed on them, thereby neutralizing the odor. Our total immersion cleaning process then flushes these contaminants from the rug for complete odor removal. Often, older and untreated pet urine contamination causes yellow or brownish stains which reduce the fine look of rugs. Our stain removal experts can often remove these stains as long as the dye itself has not been damaged.
